A Creature Was Stirring

More than 60 years ago, 1080 CHED’s production manager Jerry Forbes felt compelled to start Santas Anonymous. Jerry worked his way up at Edmonton's AM Radio for rock music, eventually becoming the station’s general manager after it moved to 630 on the AM dial. Jerry spent 28 years at CHED, retiring in June 1981. He passed away in September 1981.

In the years since, the board, staff, and volunteers of 630 CHED Santas Anonymous have carried the torch, with generations of Edmontonians fulfilling Jerry’s dream - that no child should go without a toy at Christmas.  It was in 1966 when Jerry wrote and recorded the story "A Creature was Stirring" a story to recognize and give thanks to the many Santas who deliver toys to less fortunate children across the city each year.  It would be hard pressed to din a radio piece anywhere in Canada that has been playing regularly for more than half a century, and that is a testament to the magic behind it. Some 62 years later his legacy of community building resulted in the opening of the Jerry Forbes Centre of Community Spirit, ensuring his dream will continue to live on.

So this week we reach into the CFN archives, winding up 2019 and the Holiday Season by welcoming Mr. Jerry Forbes himself and his recital of "A Creature was Stirring"  form a podcast 2 year back. From all of us here at CFN, Merry Christmas and Happy holidays, see you next year!
