CFN Attends Opening Night of Theatre Calgary's Crazy For You

If you’re having a difficult day or feel overcome by all the less than uplifting headlines out there these days, the Theatre Calgary production of Crazy for You is the kind of pick-me-up that can lift you up and re-charge you with the optimism and innocence of youth. The show is performed with a hopeful folly that only amplifies the entertaining script and gets the audience laughing from the opening scene. The ensemble cast executes with energy and flair, most especially the two leads, and once again, Theatre Calgary’s vibrant set design and brilliant orchestra bring the entire production to its ultimate level - achieving the beauty that is the temporary suspension of disbelief.

The winner of three Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Crazy for You started its original run back in 1992. The story follows Bobby Child, a New York banker with a love for show business, who is sent to foreclose on a theatre in a small mining town in Nevada. After falling in love with a local girl, Polly, he vows to put on a show to save the failing theatre. A family-friendly production, the audience enjoyed a show filled with wonderful song and dance, mistaken identity, plot twists, and laughter.

Part Annie Get Your Gun and part Holiday Inn, the production is light, fun, young and innocent; a musical comedy with songs by George and Ira Gershwin that make everything old, seem young again - the audience included. The colourful stock of images, metaphors, rituals and symbols throughout the performance allow those who take them in to negotiate a shared recollection and understanding of the innocent beauty that still exists in the world - a part of the human experience easily forgotten within today's collective dog-eat-dog fast paced gig-a-minute existence. At the performance’s conclusion, the audience wore smiles on their faces, most felt just a little bit lighter on their feet and even for just a few moments - all seemed right.

CFN would like to thank Theatre Calgary for the gracious invitation to attend this wonderful event, as well as for the continuous efforts to inform, entertain, educate and uplift the very spirit of the city of Calgary. Keep up the amazing work.
